Fountain VS. Hustler

I was told that I would get more responses on this topic overhear, so I moved it to the general discussion area.

Wanted some facts

2000 fountain with twin 500efi, bravo drives

2000 Hustler slingshot with the same power and drives.

Which rides better, faster. Anything else that should be considered?

38' fountain lightning and 388 hustler slingshot
which would you buy? Exact condition and options

Hustler is a much prettier boat. If everything is the same then why not go based on looks ;)
I saw a new Fountain at the LA show and it still looks old. Doesn't do a thing for me. A SCOPE member has a really nice Hustler called Beetlejuice. It's sharp.

Dont know too much about the hydrodynamics of the Hustler hull. But I do know that for the most part, all things being equal, its hard to beat a Fountain speed wise. But style and practicality will be a personal decision. Best advice, get a gps unit and take both boats out. See which one feels more secure and which one is faster. Hope it helps.

Now get ready for all the "38 is really 35 foot fountain" comments. Etc....

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

I looked at both when I bought my Slingshot.
Obviously, I chose the Hustler.
My main reason was cabin size.
Frankly speaking, the 38 Fountain cabin is very small.
I also liked the ride of the Slingshot a little better.
I think they are very close on speed.
They are both nice boats.
Just my opinion and you know what they say about those..

The Fountain may a bit older, but in my opinion its still a better looking boat.

Probably because that anchor locker takes up so much room. ;)

Rightfully so, the boat is 3 feet shorter.... :drink:

put a gps on both boats with the same power. i think you will find the Hustler on top.

cigrocket 03-09-2005 05:40 PM

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

Do you agree that the Hustler is a much bigger boat for the money, even if the speed is within 1-3 miles an hour. How about quality on the Hustler, I am not that familiar with them because there aren't alot around to see up close

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

get in both. spend sometime on the water and and see which one feels good to you. both are great boats and i dont think you would go wrong in either, i think the hustler would be a little faster on top end if your looking at the non step and the single step fever and i think the twin step 38 lightning might get the nudge on top end over the 388. im not a fan of the tall windshields on fountain but i do like the 38 twin step lightning with a race fairing or the low framed windshield and staggered of course.

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

If three miles an hour is an issue whipple it and go with the Hustler, way better looking. If you dont care about looks you minght as well buy a mid 90's fountain, no-one would be able to tell the difference and you'd save some more cash for bigger motors. :drink:

i looked at every boat.u want a well rounded boat that can give u everything.the fountain is a fast hull.....thats it!!!!it has a dash board that u could have a picnic on ...dont like the boat at all.i chose the 34 hustler cheetah.......an amazing boat.and with the power i have i spank fountains.

CHEETAH34 03-09-2005 06:11 PM

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

i was going to buy a slingshot....but i was in both and the cheetah runs alot better

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

my honest opinion is that first of all the 38 fountain is really 35. i'm not going to argue the fountain with same power and drives is faster but what 5 mph more. the hustler is a lot nice looking (my 002) and holds resale a lot better then fountain. looks a lot but a lot nicer then fountain.

the build on the hustler is far superior,... Vacum bagging with tri axial & bi axial rovings carbon fiber & kevlar complete in mold curing. look at the bottom of both boats you will see the the difference. also you have top of the line Mc Leod interior.much larger cabin. also take a look under the dash @ the rigging. the hustler is neat, no wires flopping everywhere. last the Hustler customer service is great. I still say the Hustler is faster also. I liked the Fountain but no way it compares to a Hustler. Jeff

Cheetah34- Would kind of power/drive and top speed are you running?

OL40SVX 03-09-2005 06:19 PM

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

I would go with the hustler for all of the reason mentiond above by the hustler owners. I looked at both boats as well before I decided on the hustler ( coming out of a fountain). Other than that the hustler is just a bigger boat all around. Also in 2000 the fountain didnt have the ultra ventilated hull therefore the hustler should be faster.
Just my opinion also.

P.S The hustlers run great with the whipples and they look really cool!!!

I checked out all boats at the Miami boat show in 2000. Fell in love with the Slingshot. with 500`s was 250k way out of my range.

Comparing these 2 boats is pretty funny

I lean towards Hustler

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

I have friends with both, one with a 99 hustler slingshot, 500 carbed engines, the other with a 2000 38 fountain with 500 EFIs. I've spent seat time in both. The hustler is 2 mph faster GPS, 84+ versus 82+.

Both ride and handle well. The hustler is a bigger boat. IMO it has nicer interior with the McLeod versus Reggie bolsters.

Other than that they are both nice boats. My pick would be Hustler. But I just like the looks of the Hustler better than the Fountain.

Isn't that why most of us come here Luci? For the entertainment value...... :drink: :drink: :drink:

And of course the real time, real experienced opinions over a magazine write up by people that are paid for selling advertising...

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

Ok here goes and I might get a reaction on this one.

Fountain is not in the same line as the Hustler, you would have a better comparison with Fountain too Formula.

Hustler is more of a custom boat manufacture. A 388 Hustler is really a 40 foot boat. You already see what Fountain is.
Go with the Hustler, will be alot better return and what really matters is the fun factor.

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

Hustler's slingshot includes the integrated swim platform. I thought the specs on the boat were just under 39 feet including the swim platform.

I here ya on that one. It does make good entertainment.

I just don't get the idea when comparing boats. No one in their right mind would ever compare a Vette to a Mustang to a Ferrari, etc. Ya just can't do it. It's like saying: What came 1st? The chicken or the egg? There is no right answer.

If spending over 150K for rigging that includes chromed brass fittings made to look like stainless steel in their in house steering, trim molding that falls apart and plastic tie wraps holding up the electrical harnesses suits you...then go with the high performance Bayliner, I mean Fountain.

Check Motor Trend - they compare them all the time.

Re: Fountain VS. Hustler

Why is everyone even mentioning what they think looks better? That is a personel opinion that should be left to the buyer, not a bunch of 'nit wits' :D :D Has no bearing on someones desicion. Focus on the quality, speed, handleing and all around layout of what you find to work or not.

And as usual, I sure like owning a boat that everyone likes to compare against. Don't recall that being the case with any other brand. Thanks

Ok, carry on. Done preachin. (Is that allowed?) :drink: :evilb:
