Some of my earliest memories as a kid was sitting on my fathers lap and steering an old wooden ChrisCraft. I was allowed to drive alone in my teens and actually trailered the boat alone at 17.

I wouldn't let my kid on the dock alone now, let alone operate my boat.

Why explain. Don't you want the same for your kids as you had?

When my son was 13 (now 17) we enrolled him in a Coast Guard class. He got certified and that summer worked at a marina in Ocean City. He spent a good part of his day "rescuing" grown-ups who rented boats to take out on the Bay who didn't know squat about driving a boat. He made a lot of tips from embarrassed men who couldn't believe that little river rat could know more about boating than them. Best summer he ever had....most $$ he ever made doing what he loves

That is a great story I love to hear stuff like that. Your son should start a Sea Tow franchise. Then he can get paid for helping boaters for the rest of his life. We need more boaters like your son...

Hmmmm .... Sixteen year old son borrows Corvette; caught burning rubber by girlfriends house. Son borrows Explorer; rolls it while doing donuts in parking lot. Son borrows boat ... NOT!!!
