How to put a new impeller in Raw Water Pump??
#1
I have a 1994 454mag and would like to know how to replace the water impeller on the raw water pump? They are fine right now, I want to get a spare impeller or impeller kit to carry with me, therefore would like to know what I'd have to do in the case one of the impellers failed?
I see you can order just an impeller or an impeller w/kit. What would I need?
I see that there are two hoses that have to come. Now, does the entire housing have to come off or can you take off just the back housing where the two hoses connect and get the imnpeller in that way??
Thanks for your help!!!

take the pump off and get the whole kit it comes with gaskets and wear plates.make sure you use wd40 on the impellerits a lot easier to install.the job should take you about ten-fifteen mins after you remove the pump.dont over tighten the bolts.

Looks like the kit has two metal plates and 3 gaskets along with impeller, is that the kit you guys are referring to??
Thanks for your help! Looks like the hard part is just the removal of the unit.... $40 bucks sound right for the kit?

Wrap a zip tie around the new impellor, and sinch it down to make all the impellor veins lean in the direction they need to go when in the housing. Get the impellor 2/3s of the way in by twisting with a little silicone spray or dish soap, then cut off the zip tie, and work it the rest of the way in. Works like a champ.

I just did this about three weeks ago. I would suggest a little dishsoap on the inside of the housing to get the impeller to go in smoother. The soap also helps to lubricate it before the water gets into the housing initially. Four bolts will go all the way through the mounting bracket. One of them will not. Be sure that the one bolt is not sticking out to far and hitting the mounting bracket. If it does and you crank the other four down the housing of the pump will crack around where that fifth bolt is. (If you can't tell I am speaking from experience) Good luck...fairly easy job other than the pump is on the bottom of the engine.
