The builder said no no way the old motors (Stock HP 500's with Whipples) made more, but Speed and RPM's indicated different.

When I told him about the motor puking he asked if I changed the timing.

Scat parts are made in china ....

is that what was in the motor ???
was this a world crate 540 ??

No, it started life as a HP500, then was stroked to a 540 with Scat. GenVI block.

Boy this sounds painfully familar,my 27 ft baja went 79 mph w/502 w/minor upgrades,procharger,merlin heads ,built 540 using same top end and bigger cam expecting decent gain ,made what i considered sub par hp on dyno(629),dyno operator swore the numbers i made were better than my 502 would have made,BOAT WENT 76MPH!!!!It took 3 months of tuning in boat to get speed back and the a additional 6 mph gain. This time around i researched things MUCH better,motor now makes 944hp,962ft lbs tq. Do you know what your intake to exhaust ratio is?The merlin heads i was using had crappy I/E of 60-62%,your blower will push air good thru a stock or mediocre intake port BUT if your exhaust port flow isn't there you will have hard time making any real power,Smitty

Another thing to consider,at least in my case,was 502 was 8.75 base compression and 540 i built was 8-1 base compression. The cubic inches alone should give you 7.5% more power but i have read that the biggest power gains from compression changes are when you go from 8-1 to 9-1 so if you gained 7.5% from just the cubic inches but built real 8-1 blower motors you might have gave up 8-10 % from compresion drop. The good news is if yuo were running 10 psi boost before at 8.75 or 9-1 w/your 502"s you should be able to go up a couple lbs boost on same gas in your 540's at 8-1and see a decent gain,Smitty

I just re-read your post,are you sure its 9-1? did pistons have flat tops or dish?my 540 pistons were J/E racing(not srp's) specifically for blower app and they have dish as pictured,Smitty

I am not sure exactly what the pistons are, the specs I was given was that they are supposed to be 9.1:1. I will know more when they are yanked and I inspect them.

Does anyone know what the Stock HP 500 Carb compresion is?


I may have a solution. I will keep everyone informed as it unfolds.
