Re: 1600 HP Pump Gas Procharged motor
Cobra1:
I think you might find that putting anything like an intercooler before the blower will probably prove to be a restriction since centrifugals are much better at blowing than sucking (Damn, that sounds obscene!). After all, the other types of superchargers suck don't they??? Heh!Heh! Man that's a nice looking engine room! 740hp from a 496 w/ stock heads is impressive. I don't have any personal experience w/ the 496, but from what i've seen and read about them, I think they have awesome potential. I haven't seen inside a stock 496 intake so I can't picture what you've done but it must be working. The Raylar does look impressive though. It sounds like you like to tinker with things like me. I'd just like to say that I have the utmost respect for guys who are willing to use a little ingenuity and experiment with their setups to see what works for them, rather than "following the crowd". After all, that's what this forum is about, in my view, and you guys make it interesting |
Re: 1600 HP Pump Gas Procharged motor
Its been along haul building the 496. When i started the project there weren't guys like Raylar out there. I spent a lot of time and money with this project. We are changing the cam next week and hope to see 800HP. The 740HP we ran on the dyno fell off at 4900RPM. I hope with the cam change and the larger intercooler will get the 800HP. I think I may be pushing my little M-1 to hard. Then again, Procharger only makes a M-1 for a 496 at this time. I guess they are waiting for guys like me to blow up their motors first. Thanks to this site i have learned so much. This is my first adventure like this and i did it all my asking the right questions.

Cobra, go to http://www.procharger.com/models.shtml and see if you can identify which procharger you have. (Thanks, nobody, for pointing that out :) )
Tomcat, I wish I was set up with pressure transducers, but not yet...soon I hope. You and nobody are right on with your thinking. I believe and have made numbers similar to what you are thinking. However, it does take some effort to get there. As you stated, intake air temp is a major consideration...camshaft selection is also a major consideration, not only to reduce boost and inherently cool the intake air temp because of lower boost levels, but to also add just the right amount of overlap to help cool the surface temp of the combustion chamber and piston. Sometimes this has very little to do with power, but can definately alter your knock tuning. Someone else mentioned FAST's statement about knock sensors, mechanical cams and such. A truly good EFI system will allow the user to correctly setup the knock filtering so it only sees true knock. The only systems I have ever seen that have this capacity is OEM systems. At present there are only a couple people that can modify the Mototron 555 processor that Merc is using now. However there are quite a few that can modify the MEFI systems. Not only can you change the noise filtering, there is also a noise "gate" which is a window of time that can be narrowed to ignore all noise to within a few degrees of crankshaft motion. We know the engine could not be knocking when the intake valve closes, right? ;) The new "coil on plug" MEFI systems use dual knock sensors and if set up correctly will only retard the cylinder that is actually knocking instead of all 8. Watch for that to become the norm instead of a distributor :D |
