Default Water pick up?

Could someone explain the reason/need for external water pick up. (Versus the standard pick up in the foot.)

I hope that doesn't sound as stupid as I feel asking it.

One reason is if you ever ground the boat you won't clog the outdrive and related tubing. Another is easier maintenance as you won't have to change the outdrive water pump, just the belt driven one. Perhaps it allows better water flow as well. My Alpha boat has a Trick Marine transom mount intake that is 1.25" hose size. I think most Alphas/Bravos use smaller diameter hoses to pass through the transom assembly.

what do you do about the ruber impeller in the foot. How and what is changed in the mod? This leads me to another question. I guess a drive shower kit picks up its own water and dumps it on the out drive cap/assemble or whatever you call it? And what gear are you cooling?
Thanks,
Tom
