P.S. To this point in time I've never had anything I got from them have a problem, so I have no experience with there warranties. Most of the items that we have purchased have been non-current items never a problem!!!

Usaully when I've called for pricing the motor with 12 month Merc. warranty is brand new, the motor for less money is also brand new but is a non-current model so they can't offer it with a Merc. warranty...[/QUOTE]
THIS IS NOT TRUE IF I HAVE AN ENGINE THAT SITS FOR TEN YEARS BEFORE SELLING IT THE ENGINE STILL HAS WARRANTY, THE WARRANTY ONLY STARTS WHEN THE ENGINE IS REGISTERED. NON CURRENT IS A SCAMMERS WAY OF SAYING NOT NEW. PROVE ME WRONG. GIVE ME A SERIAL NUMBER AND FIVE MINUTES AND I CAN GIVE YOU A COMPLETE HISTORY ON THE ENGINE.

The way I understand it and have heard it from several places, non-current comes from a package purchased from Merc then split to exhaust other needs. If that said drive or motor was sold and slated to be installed, the customer then opts for a stronger drive the stock unit is just lying around while that warranty dryes out.. Now Im not saying there isn't scams out there its hard to trust anyone theses days but having purchased many non-currents from a few different sources (some that advertise here) with no problems I would still say they are new unused.

anyone that has registered a new engine, drive, ect with mercury for warranty will tell you the warranty starts when the unit is sold. if i sell an engine and keep the rest of a power package the warranty on the drive does not start when the engine is registered. now here is what i believe is going on. mercury reman has a website that dealers can go to and buy service repaired items at an extreme discount, you really cant tell that the stuff is used. i guess i just come from the school of if its to good to be true it probably is.

Generally these 496 engines are new takeouts that are resold to shops from boat builders who upgrade power in a boat being sold new. I understand they can be absolutly new and will have a Mercury warranty from the selling dealer, if the dealer is a Mercury registered dealer. All warranties seem to be about as good as the selling dealer so if the dealer backs his warranty you should be in good shape. As always, ask a lot of questions, get real answers and get it in writing! Ca'vet Emptor!
