water pump pulley hits harmonic balancer

Has any one had to pull the hub on the water pump forward that the water pump pulley bolts up to about 3/8 " to clear the harmonic balance on a 454? This is my first boat and I have been restoring for almost two years It is a 1980 24' pantera. I would like to send a pic and see if some one can fined something wrong with it. I am trying to get it in the water this June put have a lot of other snags.

Thanks Todd

Once on a small block, I found that the balancer was not pushed back onto the crank all the way to the seat. If felt as if it were bottomed but it really wasn't, removed it and checked and found that it was hanging up a little bit. When it bottomed it was fine.

GM has long and short snout water pumps, you may have the wrong water pump, or the wp pully may not be the right one.

88fount33,
Make sure you have the correct harmonic balancer for that engine.

It happened to me one time. Luckily, I had a smaller pulley that cleared it fine. Later, I found the original pulley was warped.

Also, if the balancer is in the correct location, it will be extreme close to the timing cover, like less than 1/8 " away.
