5.7l vortec is out for rebuild to mild 383. Am considering switching from Alpha to Bravo. If do this, any recommendations on which Bravo to use / stay away from (1, 2, 3...)? Boat is small (21', 3000 lbs). Looks like engine should be somewhere around 390Hp.

you should be fine if you already have an Alpha, go easy on the starts and watch the air time. Bravo 1 would be better but not necessary. what are your driving habits? welcome to the board by the way.

A friend of mine ran a 406 sbc @ 470 hp thru an Alpha in a 20' bowrider for three seasons and no probs. Sold boat with orig. 350 mag and it's still going.
Like Glassdave said "go easy on it" and watch the "air". Unless you have a heavy boat , I wouldn't worrry about it.

good point US1. also if you want to get a bit more performance try and find an Alpha SS drive.

Thanks for responses.
Am just concerned about trashing the alpha. It is newer and has been gone through. From the labor standpoint, the engine & drive are currently out. Can pick up a Bravo 1 & transom for approx $3000. Figured could sell Alpha while it in good condition, etc.
Should probably just keep Alpha, drive conservatively & enjoy the boat. Seems like everything one does to a boat is $1G+.

VERY IMPORTANT- make sure you keep the drive oil fresh. try to use only Merc HP or Amsoil if you want to go synthetic. also get a good drive shower. i run the chit out of my Alphas and they do just fine. an im in a 6500lb boat to
. only time i have ever lost one was a prop strike once and lost a seal in an upper another time.
