Default 525 issue

Started my boat on the trailer and the rev limiter kicks in at 3000 rpm. I remember having a similar problem with my 350mag in my other boat, something to do with the ignition. All my wires check out so I'm at a loss here. Any thoughts?

All PCM controlled units have a shift switch. If the motor is in neutral the rev-limit will kick in at 3000rpm's. Easy way to check the system is to unplug the two pin plug on the shift quadrant and you motor should rev up for you. Thanks Cam-shaft.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh........hahhhhhhhhhh...........motor was cold and in neutral. I'll look for that pin. The prop is off (missing) is it safe to just put it in gear and check??? If I had a prop, I would just take it to a lake and put it under a load, but I don't right now.

UPDATE: First, thanks everybody, this motor is new to me. Ran it up to temp and since there was no prop on it, I deemed it safe to put it in gear and slowly brought the revs up to 3500 with no problems. I would of been clueless and out a lot of money probably had you guys not answered. I owe you all beers and such!!! By the way the motor sounds BadDonkey!!!! The 1st owner pulled the silencers. On another note, both of the captain's call actuators are pretty rusted and the starboard one is stuck. WD-40 or just get some new ones? How much do they usually cost. I will be running the boat in "Stealth" mode sometimes versus the usual what I like to call "Propaganda" mode

take them off and clean on wire wheel then lube up with crc and try them they should spring back to open poss by them selves when pushed in, also check the seals at the pivot for the silent choice as when they leak thats usually how the actuators get rusted up like that...
