5 mph gain after Whipple install, something wrong??

30' Superboat Y2K

Motor-540 Merlin dynoed @ 600 hp @ 5700

Ran 81.5 mph @5400 RPM on GPS with 28p Bravo 1

Installed a 2.3 intercooled Whipple over the winter.

Went for a sea trial today and here's the results

30p Bravo 1........85 mph @ 5200 rpm with 5 lbs of boost

28p Bravo 1........86.3 mph@ 5700 rpm with 6 lbs of boost

I was hoping for more. Does this seem right??

These are GPS speeds. The Gaffrig liquid filled speedo read 90 mph.

Thanks

same rpm, same pitch prop, 5mph more? someting is wrong. at least your prop slip decreased. play with some props also.

I would think you would gain no less than 10mph, was there a dyno test after the whipple was installed?

No. we did not dyno the motor after the install.

Even a 3.3 is out of it's efficiency range on a 540. You will have to spin it up pretty hard, 14,000? max. SC rpm. Better yet, look for another 2.3 and intake and go with a quad rotor :D

Is 5 lbs of boost from a 2.3 different from 5 lbs of boost from a 3.3?

Yes,
You have to spin it too hard, and make too much heat. Your probably only making 700HP, instead of the 800+HP a 3.3 could make. Ask Dustin for more specifics.

Bottom line, you have too small a blower. Sorry-

Good news is the quad rotor idea is great. Thats what I have on my 540.

Don't be sorry. Just another example of deception that goes on in the boat business. The person I bought it from told me it was a 3.3!

Would an intercooler help him?
