I am getting a 900+ HP 565 Whipple charged BBC from Tyler Crockett. He suggested the IMCO SC for the engine. How bad is this going to be?

If your looking for drives, your motor must be done. Looking forward to seeing it run.
Hey, I would talk to Max Machine works. Their XR upgrades seem to be holding well up under some big horsepower. I would also talk to IMCO regarding the XA 1000, vs the Extreme SC.
I don't know anything about the new Konrad Ace, but Biggus on here (OSO) is a rep for them, and can probably fill you in.
Regards,
Steve

What about warranty???

The BMax is warranted to 950TQ/HP
Like rat said Smitty has probs with his lower gears .The lower gears are the week link in all on them that still use the Merc style gears.PM Smitty he'll give ya the scoop?
I am running the B max's

Guys, thanks for the words of encouragement? I am going with the IMCO SC and try to be gentle. (Yeah, right.) I'll keep you posted as this thing comes together, maybe 2 more weeks. Tyler dynoed the engine yesterday using 2 pulley sizes, one for 93 and one for racing fuel. You don't race dynos but it will be interesting to see the results.

My current motor made 944 hp and 967 ft lbs of tq on Tylers dyno last spring. I'm running a max worx drive with all their upgrades other than their billet lower hsg which is supposed to have double vert shaft bearings which supposedly will make the lower gears last longer. My lower gears seem to be the weak point, about every 50 hours or so the lower gears start to chip and fall apart. My boat spends as much time Idling thru no-wake zones as it does cruising under hard power so thats really more like it breaks the outdrive every 20-30 hours of actual hard use. In My opinion ANY drive that has STOCK xr type gears once all the other upgrades are done will still have gear failure once you start making the kind of power we are talking about. I change my outdrive oil just about every weekend (5-10 hours use) and there is ALWAYS metal in it. I bought a complete Max spare outdrive and all the tools to rebuild them and when one starts to make noise I pull it off and throw the spare on while I fix it. I would have just bought a B-max a few years ago but there old models still used stock xr lower gears too so it wouldn't have been any better for me that I could tell. With all the new drive options that are coming out I'd reccomend buying something with stronger gears so you can use your boat without problems. Ive got 20,000$ wrapped up in my drive and spare drive,in retrospect that money should have went towards something that would be trouble free,I sure wouldn't do it again today.
Is Tyler going to tune your motor once its in the boat? My motor ran excellent on the dyno, made killer torque and he set the air fuel ratio thru out the rpm band between 11.2-11.8 (as close to 11.5 as he could). Once it was in the boat it ran good but felt like it could run better. I threaded a o2 sensor fitting in my exhaust and Tyler temporarily installed his portable o2 sensor meter in boat and we drove in it while he Re-tuned it. The air fuel ratio was closer to 9.8-10.5 at alot of rpm bands as installed. He re-programmed it under real world conditions while we were under way until the air fuel readings were back around 11.5. The boat ran much cleaner, slightly faster and got about 10-20 % better mileage. After seeing that I would HIGHLY reccomend doing that on anything after the initial dyno run. It was something else watching Tyler sitting in the back seat of my 272 Baja while flying down the St Claire river at 80-90 mph while he punched his lap top
. He didn't even want a life jacket!!! I was standing boat up totally out of control off cross-chop and rollers we were hitting and he kept saying "keep holding it,I need to see the numbers stabilize". Good luck, let us know what you decide and how your boat runs. I saw a hair under 93mph at the end of last season,if I get a shorter lower casing I expect to see mid to upper 90's this year,Smitty

It's gonna break at some point or another, it's just a matter of how long it's gonna make it. If you can get thru a season and rebuild in the winter your doing ok. It's all about setup, the tolerances have to be perfect if they're going to last for any given length of time.
For me there were no problems with the lowers, I kept breaking upper drive gears.
I'm switching over to the BMax and I'm looking forward to seeing how things go.

Tyler said he runs an Imco on his race boat. He also has a 1200 hp turbo motor that he runs for fun in that same boat. I beleive alot has to do with how you drive your boat. Easy off the line and roll into the throttle versus slamming it wide open and it will go further before it gives up. If you want something that will not break, then your only choice is a Konrad if you are going for a Bravo type setup.

I give it one good wack of the sticks...with 900HP they ain't got a chance in hell.
I had issues with a leaky upper and also one without the water passage machined in it.
And all I got was...
"What part of no warranty don't you understand"
Phuck IMCO!
Get the Bmax and take it easy till the new lower gears get worked out, then drop those in and go.

Smitty and others, thank all of for you for responding. Whoever said that speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?--- forgot to say that you don't even have to go. I've spent too much too soon and my motor is still dry.
Tyler called yesterday and my 565 Whipple makes 1000 ft lbs of torque at 3500 and 940 hp at 5500. So, what do you do with that except, as many have stated, be really careful with the drive. My Sc delivered today with wimpy U joints that will be upgraded. I called the Brave Shop today and the BMax is 5 to six weeks out. That is not an option in mid April. I am reminded why I don't have twins.
I am having a bung for the O2 sensor put on the exhaust and Tyler said he would be happy to come and fine tune the motor once on the water. I have aggravated him to no end by asking too many questions and he has been way more patient than I would have ever been under the circumstances.
I'll keep you posted once EB Marine gets all of this plugged up in my 27 Lavey cat. What the heck? At 58 I may not have many years left. Let er rip.
