What is the present starter of choice? The application is BBC,single cooler bell housing, drive line transmission or crash box's,8.5:1 compression--blower motors, rear top mount starter location. No load idle speed is 1400 RPM.....Also,how much of the starter gear should extend into the flywheel starter ring?...Thanks

Re: Rear Top Mount Starter
Are you using offshore mount plates as well? If so, learn the term "cut flywheel housing" AKA "machined bell housing".
In the final configuration, the starter gear should engage the flywheel by about 3/8 of an inch.
They do not make starters with varying lengths of engagement capabilities. If you use a mount plate, you have to machine about 1/4 inch (thickness of your plate) off of the bell housing (flywheel housing) to get the starter to engage to the proper depth.
I learned this the hard way and lost about 3 weeks and a couple of b.o.a.t.s (break out another thousand). It could have been easily fixed initial during assembly had we known.
Good luck.

Re: Rear Top Mount Starter
waterbum,Thanks for your response.....The flywheel starter ring is .50 wide.Therefore,3/8" or .375 engagement won't fully utilize the starter ring or starter pinion.....The bell housing is offshore type and .375 thick...There is not enough material to machine for a better tolerance....However,did you consider re-cutting the armature snap ring location and relieving the inside of the snout?...The solenoid linkage is another problem, which seems manageable.
