Default Alarm Buzzer Questions

Ok I have 2 questions.

The first. The alarm on the port engine, when you turn the key on beeps normal. when you fire the engine ,sometimes it goes off completely and most of the time it is muffled (like on mute). Everything has been checked, drive resevoir, oil press, oil temp, water temp and is all fine. where should i start to diagnose it?

Second. I was cruising for about 30 minutes yesterday, slowed down to idle and the buzzer went off. I thought it was the port engine, but ended up being the starboard engine. all gauges were good. I killed the engine, checked the resevoir, and it was good. fired it up, buzzed for a sec, then went off. Did this a second time and my water temp was at 160 (normally around 145) I revved the engine to ~2500 rpms to circulate water and it went off within 5 seconds. Another note on this engine. I have been noticing at idle, my water temp will be @ 140 then drop to 100, slowly back up to 140, again this is at idle only. Is my thermostat sticking open, and maybe starting to stick closed?

Thanks-=

Jason

I would start by replacing the t-stats.

the buzzer may be a bad sender, assuming that the wiring is in good shape.

Before checking those, find the main engine harness plug and open it to check for corrosion in there, if that's good, then you will have to wait for the buzzer to stay on, then disconnect each sender until it goes off.

The easiest one is the high water temp switch, then the drive reservoir bottle and then the low oil pressure switch which could be hard to get at.

Good luck

Does unplugging them make the circuit good? I guess to clarify, If I unplug the bad sender, will the buzzer go off?

one thing that is wierd is the buzzer goes from loud to muted, but still stays on.

When you say you checked the resevoir, I assume you have FWC. What engine / year do you have. It sounds like the thermostat is sticking as it looks like it runs hot, and cool.

The buzzer on mute could just be it wearing out. It should go off completely.

Yes, FWC. They are 2000 carb'd hp500's in a 36' baja outlaw.

The muted buzzer is on the port engine. The thermostat problem (which just started) is on the starboard.

The port engine shows no signs of any problems, just the muted buzzer.

The alarm circuit works by making ground through the sender switches when they are tripped. So if you disconnect one and the alarm buzzer stops, then that's your problem.
