GGB Muffler Failure
#12
Dave,
I have never seen such a clean break! That looks like it was cut and flared on purpose like that. The picture is not that detailed, does it look like there was any penetration on the end by the weld? Or was it just a cold weld? My extremes still look great. No problems to report. I wonder if yours failed simply because of the extra load generated by those turn downs? Will your new CMI's have those same turn downs?

Why would you have a muffler and a turn down? The turndown should muffle any motor to pass the dba meter. I see a few of you have them, enlighten me please.
There is a lot of stress on a turn down when you re-enter the water so it's not suprising to see that failure if you're attaching a turndown to a muffer.
CMI has made several sets for us and that why they custom bend them and don't segment/weld them.
If you need assitance or a set of turndowns by CMI, we can help.

They wields look to be of poor quality. Just a few spot welds around the edge the rest looks like it was not wielded. The new CMI's have no turn downs. It's not offered.
I have the mufflers with turn downs to get under 88dbs. It was at 85db. Also at speed it was very quite. I have small children and big noise is not an option. It was fun as a sleeper boat. No one had any idea until it was too late.

Honestly I lost nothing. It ran over 100 all day long before and after. I really liked this setup. Unfortunately it's gone for now. I hope the CMI's are as good. I'll know this weekend.
BTW it only had 45* turndowns.

You’re not going to believe this. I lost the muffler in the Hudson River last year. It’s reasonably deep and visibility is rarely over two feet. Since I could have lost it anywhere within a mile long stretch I never looked for it.
A week ago I pulled up to the island and my buddy has my long lost muffler in his hands. He found it diving just 30' from where we anchor. A local welder is fixing it and reinforcing the welds so I never lose it again. I'm still in shock, it was down there for 12 months on looks like new.
Like I've always said, I'd rather be lucky than good.

Talk about lookin for a needle in a haystack. Good for you, I'm glad to see you got it back. I've got mine safety wired on. But, I guess if the weld breaks, the safety wire won't help at all.
