About 1 really big launch and bad re-entry.
Good maintenance practice is replacing drive fluid every 20-40 hours depending on use. Pull the drive and lube the U-joints and check alignment at least once or twice a season.
Upper gears, lower gears, verticle shafts, cone clutches, U-joints.
Leave the boat on the trailer. (Seriously, baby it out of the hole, and go easy in rough water.)

I had problems until I started using amzoil gear lube in the drives and every spring remove the drives and bring them to the shop have them taken apart. Bring the gears and shafts to a machine shop and have the parts magnafluxed for cracks and just replace the bad parts before they explode. Much cheaper and dependable.

Should these parts just be replaced every year as preventative maintenance???
