The filter on the HP500EFI is a cotton K&N filter and special care needs to be taken when cleaning it.
I am not sure of the interval for cleaning the filter but her is the way I do it:
To clean the filter you must use a air filter cleaner, submerge the filter for 15-20min. Then you flush the filter from the inside out with low pressure water. Shake of the water and let the filter dry completely, do not use pressurized air, this can damage the filter.
Do not use any petroleum products to clean the filter this may damage the rubber in different ways.
Use the right amount of good filter oil from a squeeze bottle when re-oiling the filter. For the HP500EFI filter (K & N), the amount of oil is 18ml (0,59oz). Put a line of oil on the tops and let it soke inn. After re-oiling the filter let it set for some time.
Then you are done and the filter is as good as new.
