A good test indicator is around $100. Starret, B&S.
Howza about take the piston to TDC, remove a valve spring and let it drop on top the piston. Then position a dial indicator on top of the valve stem? Then slowly moving the piston up and down just an 1/8" or so using the valve to follow the piston, reading the indicator? Just don't spin the motor over. Then again, if you did, you could just put the indicator on top of the piston at that time.
Whoops, seen you got it. Better start reading the post start to end before replying.

Glad you didn't give me that idea early today Jerry, I'd have tried it for sure. I don't think I could get the spring off with the headers in the way though.
Bill, I am apparently not allow to post pics due to my frugality. I took some to post but forgot about that. Email me and I will shoot them to you. I moved and don't have your email anymore.
