pumped up system with little blue hand pump but when I pulled pin to release water nothing drained ?

Pulling the pin releases the pressure on the system. Water should have drained out as you were pumping the blue pump. The two little green nipples should have popped out indicating the system is fully pressurized. If no water flowed out while you were pumping, you did not have the pump properly seated on the Schrader valve.

There is more to winterizing a 496 than just using the quick drain. If your going for the dry method you need to pull all the blue plugs. I think theres 5. Not sure though. The better way IMO would be to run antifreeze through.
