Those can be made to flow but they have big chambers and it has been my experience that Windsors like tight combustion chambers. Obviously cast in the 80's for example; E8 means cast in 1988

2112,

He must be reading the casting#'s wrong. In the pic, it appears it has adjustable rockers. And that was long gone by the eighties.

For a 16 footer, I can't imagine too many options better than a SBF. If he wanted he could turn it into a monster of an engine. Even if he is on a budget, he can exceed 1HP per inch and have a hell of a ride.

It is an oldie and needs updating but Pat Gahnal's book of Ford V-8s is a good place to find out how to build a stout 302.

PS those log manifolds will rob you of most of the power you try to get out of what you have.

Why bother with stock heads? There are soo many SBF heads on the market right now that flow 10x better. Don't even think about porting, invest the money in new heads.

351w has larger head bolts than a 302. To run the 302 heads on a 351w, the head bolt holes would need to be drilled out. Not saying it hasn't been done, but it most likely wouldn't be worth it for any potential gains.

This looks to me like a 302. A 351w has a much wider intake manifold. It is very obvious.

Go with aftermarket heads on a fresh build. The stock Ford windsor heads are terrible for air flow. If you want it to breathe, you'll either spend a ton of money on head work, or spend that money on a nice clean set that will still flow better out of the box.

The 351W cam does have a different firing order than the old 302. Once ford came out with the HO 302 in the eighties though, they used the same firing order as the 351W then.

I remember the first engine I built was a 351W. I was 16 and was just learning about engines. Me and my buddies had the hardest time trying to figure out how the cam could determine the firing order! We figured it out eventually!
