is it a 302?
 

Just started tear down on the motor for a 16 donzi.
What is it?
I know it is Ford, approx 1972
says interceptor, 190 hp.
Heads have 302 stamped on them.
Going to send heads and block to machine shop.
What would be recommended to do to this motor.
Easy upgrades, intake? carb? heads? distr? manifolds?
Not looking to make crazy HP due to small boat just easy and not to much $$$ while at this point.

From the pics, its either a 302 or 289. You can check the bore and stroke now that the heads are off. 289=4.00x2.87 and the 302 is of course 4.00x3.00 stroke. By the look of the sludge-oil-stains, it may have been a swapped out car motor. There are all kinds of mods you can you to that little motor to really make it scream. At the least, I would do a nice rebuild, with quailty machine work, up-grade to flat-top pistons, install larger valves in the heads, Go with some SS 1.94int. & 1.60ex. a hot little hyd. cam, around a 280/480, then dump that intake and 2-popper for a nice alumn. intake, like a edelbrock performer rpm, and holley 600cfm 4-bbl. You will have 300hp all day. FYI, we just finished a project for a customers original hollman-moody Donzi-swwet-16. We replaced the little 289 with one of our 450hp-347cid stroker 302's. Still playing with props on that volvo, but it's seen 76mph while sitting at 5700 on the rev-limiter.

289s stopped production around 67 or so. Definitely a Windsor head. The best stock Windsor head is from a 69 351. They are a direct bolt on and not much $ Of course there are tons of great heads out there for more.

If you stay with stock heads, in addition to the above upgrades, remember screw in studs and grind off the exhaust bump in the exhaust ports.

just measured, it has just over 3" stroke, so it is a 302.
Now how to tell what the heads are?

Over 3" stroke?? Than its not a 302. The next nominal stroke for a wedge head sbf would be 3.50 and than you would have a 351w. Double check your stroke again. Also, if you post the casting#'s on the heads, I'll tell you what you have. Mark

Why not?? I have had plenty of engines come through the door with 302 heads on a 351. Espesially if they were trying to low-buck some compression ratio. I also had a 302 once come in with a 351 cam in it, that no one could ever get running right. As they never knew the 351 had a different firing order than a 302.

Also i never doubted they were 302 heads. Just going to tell the guy what vintage they were if he supplies the casting#'s. But if he has over 3 inches of stroke, its obviously not a 302.

Got a good measurement, it is 3" stroke.
Here is what I found on the block and Heads.
"Pomoco" and 302 on both
On heads, 8H13 302 and 8H14 302

What is recommended to do or replace on block and heads to make reliable modest HP at best price?

should have a C, D, E or F. C built in the 60's, D in the 70's, E in the 80's, F in the 90's.

Late 60's heads were probably the best for the small combustion chambers and decent size valves.

The heads have an "E" stamped on them,
