Default checking coolant temp sensor

my coolant gauge is off by about 40 degrees and it was not last year in my stock motor,i am hoping it is the sensor,i moved it from my t-stat housing into the intake because it was moving from old temp to another while running, but wasnt even that hot, according to my temp gun,so does anyone know how to test my sensor with an ohm meter?????????please
