RTV on exhaust manifolds?

RTV on exhaust manifolds?
I'm replacing the exhaust on my 454s with stock Merc cast iron. New manifolds, spacers, and risers. Someone told me to use the copper ultra RTV, but I thought I heard or read that you're not supposed to. Any reasons not to smear some of the copper onto the flanges before putting the gaskets on? Thanks.
