exhaust manifolds

exhaust manifolds
Just started a new rebuilt 350 motor and found lots of smoke coming from bank 1 exhaust side. i removed the water feeds on the exhaust manifold and riser for bank 1 and the smoke went away and i felt exhaust pressure coming from the riser water feed port. I think this possibly means the exhaust manifolds are bad??. does this sound right. If i removed both water feed on the exhaust manifold and i can feel exhaust pressure coming from the water feed ports then there is a leak. I would imagine i should not feel anythinf i the water poerts with the feed disconnected.

at the end of the exaust manifold, the water and exaust come together, there is no vavle on the water portion to keep exaust from flowing back into the water portion, getting exaust pressure out the waterport when disconnected would be a normal thing, unless it a full dry exaust sys.

Is the engine on a stand or in the boat? You would get the pressure back through the water inlet if the exhaust was making back pressure on the part of the exhaust where the water normally exits the riser. (running through the transom or prop will cause the back pressure)
'smoke' or steam? New manifolds and risers? Or did you make the mistake of using the old ones?
