Updating the ECM will really depend on how the 540 is made, what cam, what heads, what exhaust etc? If you were to use the stock cam and heads and stock exhaust the ECM would probably be just fine. Change any of those things and possible the ECM will need a little tweaking, which is not difficult on the MEFI units. Better to "Measure Twice and Cut Once" on dialing in an expensive marine high performance engine!
