Yes when they go you will def. know. We had our family out one time and they called me saying the blew the motor because they herd this horrible shreaking noise and all they could smell was burning rubber and tons of smoke pouring out of the hatch when they opened it up. I made them tow it home too a look at it and it turned out to be a spun drive coupler.

Replacing both of mine right now. From what I was told, if you look inside the coupler from the drive side and the rubber splines are worn to points, like teeth....then they're on the way out. The splines should be flat, similar to the splines on the shaft. Although my issue was caused by the prior owner having never greased them, so not sure if the same symptom/diagnosis would apply.

Your coupler is going south!!

The splines look fine, here is some closer picks, its melted rubber, Theres no grease on this side.
You can see were the spline piece and the rubber meet, it looks like it melted in there ,the other stuff looks like slung melted rubber. Its weird the old one looks OK, the new one going out that soon? What do you all think? Thanks for the input Rob |

Stip,
may be a case of the newer one being built in a not so quality manner as the first one. It looks like toast to me. I would replace it.. Dick |

I lost the coupler in my Donzi this past summer, no burnt rubber, no noise, no nothin', no movement.
Took all the splines out of the center of the coupler. Ken |
Strip,
Merc offers three different ones that I know of.. The aluminum hub, the short steel hub, and the long steel hub. My point is that the old one may have been made by a different supplier and it was made better in the old days. The ones I just ordered a few months back look like the one on the left, accept the back side is not painted. I ordered one for myself, to hold back my new procharged motor, hp to be determined when it is finished. The other was for a customer and it didnt arrive in time for him, so he purchased one elsewhere.. so I have the extra one. The long steel hub is for the grease seal on the input shaft. Not sure if it is stronger or not. Dont know if either have different rubber compounds or not.. Ken, Usually the aluminum hubbed units will wear out the splines like you mentioned.. Dick |
