You should be trying a 3/8" -16 die on that.. but I agree the case is very thin. My guy is looking at making a new case, thicker, just need to find the right thermistor to shove in it.
And I got so focused on the broken case, and didnt realize it was yellow underneath. When I first looked at it, I was wondering if it was chrome.. I was going to try and cut the crimped rim off the nut to look at the plastic plug, but didnt get to it. I'll keep trying. |

I guess you know by now that the Gaffrig sensor is not stainless but chrome plated brass. I learned that today when I tried a threading die on it. The sensor actually bent during the process. When I tried to straighten it it seperated at the threads. The Gaffrig sensor's brass body is thinner walled than the Livorsi oil temperature sensor and will not tolerate the 1/4-28 thread.

Hi guys, I've been out of town for a few days. Anyway I was looking around for some other parts and when I went to Dana's site guess what I found? Yep! They have a drive temp sender kit made up with the sender, wire, and braided stainless sleeve right in their catalog. I haven't been able to verify that they still have them and they are a little pricy($225. each) but it seems that someone is still making some form of this thing. There wasn't a pic so I don't know if it looks like the ones I just bought. I will post pics of the ones I got on ebay last week, hopefully tomorrow. I'll also try to see if Dana has a pic to send me of theirs.

What is Dana`s part number for the drive temp kit?

What the hell are you talking about Chip ? You never said I needed to come out of pocket for the gauges. I remember you told me that Mike Livorsi said they were old stock that couldn't be moved because they didn't have sensors to go with them. I haven't seen or heard from you in a month and a half, you know where my shop is, I'm real easy to get a hold of.
I guess you never really had any intention of helping with this project. I would appreciate it if you would return my finished sample and my blueprint for the sensor. Beware ? Beware of what? And answer to whom? No one has contacted me about paying for those gauges. I would be glad to if I knew who expected to be paid for them. You got some nerve buddy. |
I do not know the arrangement you guys had, nor do I want to get in the middle of this. I did send the gauges to Chip and agreed to supply them at cost. DJ has contacted me and we are good as he will pay me for the gauges with no issue. I wish you well with this project. If I can help in any way, please let me know. I dont want anything for it, just trying to help.

It's been awhile since I checked on this thread. I finally got the pics of the 2 setups I got off of ebay. They are not the same as the others I had so several people where making different sensors. The biggest thing that is noticable on either set up is how thin the probe is going into the drive. These are stainless as where the others. The probes are the sams but the body is different. The others had a sort of jamb nut and an O ring these don't. These actually seem to be a little cheaper made but the gauge is nicer.. The other's had a plastic sealed wire twisted like phone cord thru the tramsom and these have the braided shielding. Did anyone check out to see if that Dana part number is still an available item? Let us know. Now let me see if I can get the pics attached. I hope everyone got their issues worked out?

Waiting to see what Mr Gadgets comes up with. I only boat in fresh water so I would be happy with a brass body and an integral ground wire.

I was able to get in touch with the company that use to make the Livorsi drive temp sender and was able to buy some of the left over parts. So now I can fix my senders I will have plenty left over parts to repair quite a few so I can help out some of you that have them.

Yes I have the actual sensor to repair yours and I have some other parts. If you take out your sensor by cutting the wire harness inside of the hull a foot or so from the thru hull fitting and send everything from the thru hull to the drive to me I will repair it and put on a weather pac connector and send you the other half to install on the harness left in the boat. Cost $60.00

If any of you guys get these gauges working I'd really like to see some readings with and without a drive shower. I just question the need for a shower. If you look at the back of a boat running at speed there is water all over the place back there. That upper drive is NOT high and dry. At least not with a shorty and wet exhaust..........

I have Bmax drives with XR bottoms so no drive shower do to the water jacketed housing. I played with moving the center drive at different heights and you could see the temps change as the drive had more or less load put on it. I must say it was nice to have them working again, I hate when a gauge doesn't work. |
Update
Had the boat out this weekend and noticed that the temp was up on 2 of the drives about 30 degs when I was over 65 mph so I keep the speed down and when I got it home found the water hole that feeds the Bmax upper on those to drives were plugged with wood. So I'm pretty sure the senders saved my drives. |
Well done John!!
Had a question on Promariner charger. See the other thread or email please. |

I have the housings complete and they are being fitted with the sensors. They thread right into the vent plug hole, they are stainless and will have a stainless sheath encasing the conductors up to the transom. Final construction is close at hand. The units will be available as just the sender or in a gauge package. Pricing will be set once construction and minimum order criteria are finalized.
I have designed the shank under the hex head with a 5mm shoulder to accomodate the factory washer and prevent the hex head from grinding into the drive housing as it's tightend. PM for more info. |
Cool ,,,congrats .Looks good ,,maybe i take 1 or 2 or 3 ??!!!
I can maybe hook u up with the gauges for it from Gaffrig ?! |

Thanks DareDevil, I appreciate the offer but I've already been in contact with Kirk @ Elite and I believe he can accomodate the overall packaging with a gauge.
