Yea I have an IR gun and it is useful but the problem or the issue I had was checking under power. Once I slow readings change rather quickly.

I should have posted my meter has 4 Temperture input leads,if not stick your friend under the engine hatch!!!

In the pan, you want oil temp after it has cycled through the engine. A spike in temp will tell you if something is loosing lubrication (IE bearing failure). Wet sump system take it in the pan, dry sump take it in the tank.

Problem is when most people ask it is an existing installation and it will be difficult to add a pan located sensor .....
