I'm no expert on this,but I think Bdarcher has it right. I was always led to believe that all the really high quality bolts/studs have rolled threads to give them strength. That, and the material they're made from. I can't explain it here,but if you hold a rolled vs cut thread bolt side by side, you can see the difference in the root diameter of the bolt. For what it's worth....

Rolled threads are by turning the stud or rolling die. It compresses the metal as it forms the thread without removing steel. Like a wheel stud. A machine cut thread removes steel to make thread. Its still plenty strong to hold the drive on. Grade 8 is just higher carbon steel stronger. Wheel studs, allen head bolts are usually rolled 4150 steel heat treated. Dorman has a lot of double ended studs at Napa auto parts. Probley 1/2-13 on one end 1/2-20 fine thread on other grade 8. Would be around 5 bucks each.

Hi! ARP makes a 1/2 x 2.750" stud with 1.00" of 1/2-13
thread on the bottom and 1.00" of 1/2-20 thread on the top portion
leaving .750 of non-threaded. part # is
AR2.750-1LB and is $5.18 each.

Wow talk about a price difference. Dare did you get them for $5.18? If so that is ridiculous that merc would be charging $77. I mean arp still had to made profit off those but a $70 something dollar profit thats absurd.

I'm glad it helped you out! Hate to see someone get bent over. Merc doesn't make any of their stuff. OEM in marine doesn't mean it's going to be better. Cars yes, but different story. Most Merc stuff isn't that good. Not the strongest and you will over pay as this shows. Better stuff and technology out there. Their stuff works ok for stock when it was built. Look how long they stayed with points! lol Scott you do have to be careful with the stainless, but not all is bad. Most stainless that has cut threads galls once you put the nut on especially with nylock nuts. Rolled like ARP's won't do that though. Stainless is a really strong material. Good luck Charlie
