Default Holley 800 or 830cfm Whats the differance

Ok,I posted on converting a 502 to a hp500 and 1 of the things I will need is a carb. I have been told Merc uses the 800cfm carb. Is this true ? I was looking in CP Performance and the 800 has a manual choke. Can this be used without the choke, and if so what do you do to disable it. I also see in CP Performance the Holley 830cfm. It states it is race calibration. I was told that it is the same as the 800 only it has no choke and it would be equivelant to a bluprinted carb from the factory. IS THIS TRUE ? I also am told there is a 800 cfm with electric choke, but I dont see it listed. Is this true. ANY and ALL help would be apreciated. Sorry for such a long post but these carbs arent cheap. Anyone selling a 830cfm at a decent price?

Thanks Paul

Yes, the HP500 use the Holley 800 w/electric choke. You can buy the manual choke carb and just wire it open to not use, or remove it all together. Chokes aren't a real big needed thing on boats as in cars, unless you go boating in snow. But do make warm up a little easier. I don't have a choke on my 1050. 1 pump and she fires right up. Or you can buy the electric choke kit for $40. OR you can check out the 2 ads in the classifieds section for the Holley 800's for sale.

The 830 should have 4 corner idle makes a big cam idle a lot slower they use a 850 carb body and a 750 base plate most are annular discharge better mixture control and better air speed in the carb.Marine usage dont worrey about 800 vrs 850 I like the 4 corner idle with front and rear power valves the race or hp will have this at around 400$ from summit or jegs for the 830.I dont run chokes I like to let my eng warm up for a couple of minutes that is all it takes.

US1 Fountainan and fstboater thanks for the help. I have seen the ads for the carbs and this is how this discussion started. It seems I can almost buy a new one for the same price or a little more than a used 1.I have e-mailed almost every ad and everyone was very helpful. But if I only can save $100.00 bucks or so I might as well buy new . Right? My biggest concern was as you stated USA 1 Fountain boats really dont need a choke and I did not want one. But I didnt want to **** rig stuff so it doesnt look good.

Thanks for the help
Paul

I`d go with the 830, they have a much smoother transition from the primary to the secondarys and pretty much eliminate the lean spot just before the secondarys open. I`ve found them to work very well.

Kurt.

Kurt, thanks for the reply. That is pretty much the way I am leaning and that is why I have been trying to get opinions from my O.S.O brothers and sisters.

Thanks Paul
