Your stock setup was not made for that much HP. There are major restrictions everywere. The oil filter adapter should be upgraded, the oil lines & fittings are too restrictive, I took a rotory tool and enlarged and cleaned up my oil filter housing. I assume you have a aftermarket (large) oil cooler? Again I found out about it after I flattend out a cam, went lean and blew a hole in a piston (second blow up). I use all AN fittings now. If you get a Blue motor they have already upgraded these things. Black motors are desingned for what they are. There is a post that addresses these issues I will find it and put it to the top.

Did you get your computer reprogramed for the upgrades?

This engine went through 8 hours of break in and tuning on the dyno.

Just checking, a lot of guys have tried to run stock programing after upgrades. Did you check out the oiling thread?

Well, the consensus is they are loosing the captains call, going with risers that exit the water further back becuase i can't get any bit of a riser height in there. Sounds like they are exploring options for mufflers and are mostly looking at IMCO's mufflers. They seem really high priced. I was looking at CP Performances mufflers, they have Hardin switchable mufflers, as well as some sort of exhuast muffler tip for the 496 motors to make them compliant with the regulations. Any thoughts on those or the switcheables? Seems like spending 900+ bucks on IMCO gatlins or someting of the sort is overboard.

I just did my motors with a crane 741 cam bigger than yours im running stock gill with the tall risers i welded a 1/2" tall peice of stainless across the inside of the pipe just behind the water hole dumps, so far 6 hours on it no problems. (knock on wood)

My engine guy is saying there is no way that the motor can breath just going through the hoses on each valve cover and up to the flame arrester. He says there is a pcv valve system that has to be in place as well. I have never seen such thing on the motor. It is apparently connected to the intake plenum some how. Anyone know what he is talkin about? He says both systems have to be in place or the motor will not breath adequately.

25 years of marine bbc's and I've never seen a pcv valve on one.

look again. every HP500 has a pcv valve behind the carb in the intake manifold. every 500 efi also has one. I have them in stock and usually only have to replace them because they get a little rusty and don't look good. you must have a shield under the intake if you are to use one or you will consume alot of oil and foul the plugs.
