NOT ALL DRIVES CAN COUNTER ROTATE!
The drive must be specifically designed to be a counter rotation drive.
Attempting to run a standard rotation drive in a counter rotation direction
will positively destroy the drive in just a few minutes.

In most applications the RH (standard) drive is mounted on the starboard side.
The LH (counter rotation) drive is mounted on the port side.
The LH drive must have a LH propeller. The LH shift cable must be reversed at the binnacle to pull instead of push
for forward gear. Most controls allow for either direction by simply repositioning
the cable mounting location and attachment.

Always use extreme care when reinstalling the drives that they are properly
installed on the correct side or extreme expensive damage will occur.
I now when you are taking on and off a standard rotation unit you have to shift in to forward gear but on a counter rotating unit i can not find anything on how to insall. For instance do you reverse the cable and then put it in drive and change the units out or do you leave it in neutral and install the unit,i dont no and i cant find anything on the counter cotating unit.I thought i would post it and some one on here would know the answer. p.s. i had a new unit put on the boat and it lasted about two hours and i have been told some different reasons for the problem.I just want to know the proper way to install a counter rotating unit. thanks for all the info keep it coming

to remove and install a standard unit, you put it in fwd gear, that lines up the shifter arm straight on the bell housing and the drive, so it slides off, on a counter-rotating drive that shifter arm should be straight when in reverse, it's easy to check, just look under the bell housing assy. where the shifter arm meets the drive and see when it is straight, thats when you can pull and install the drive.

When do you change the shift cable around, after the counter rotating unit is on?

Ok I know this is an old post but I searched for it because I recently changed my port motor to a LH rotation by buying a counter rotating lower unit. I also rebuilt both motors which added about 100hp per motor to bring them around 400hp each(educated guess by engine builder not dyno tested) I am confused because the boat is slower than when it had both RH lower units . I also thought I would be able to go up in pitch size but am still running 19's X 15 1/4 wheels. She ran around 68 before and can't seem to get over 62 now. RH motor is runinng 4800 rpm and the LH is runing 4600 rpm at WOT. Any suggestions???
