Exclamation Oil choices

What weight and type of oils do you guys run in your big blocks. I am running a straight 30 right now...but have been told its not enough. Synthetic would probably be my next choice, but I'm unsure about the break down factor.

Straight 30 is great or u can go with 25-30 weight which is a bit lighter. i would stay away from the synthetic unless u have a newer engine or u plan on burning synthetic for the future and never changing back to non synthetic..

I've used 15W50 Mobil 1 for over 10 years and hundreds and hundreds of hours.

Hey Mike,

I am speaking from personal experience. My 96 Z71 chevy 305 started leaking oil from the engine seals. I guess the new sythetic's are a better grade of oil mixed with minerals. I am not the one to steer someone in a direction that I wont go. Anyway if you tried it please keep me posted. Dont want my seals to go bad on my marine motor.

Thanks on the input..

Depending on what year engine you have. If your engine is 2000 and newer i would use synthetic or mineral but if your engine is older than 2000 i would stick to either mineral or synthetic only!!

There are many people here running synthetic oil in their pre 2000 boat. Mobil 1 15-50 is very popular. Mercruiser reccomends 30 wt for cold climates only. For normal summer temps 40 wt is reccomended or Merc oil which is 25-40. Frantic needs to do a little more research. There is a lot of info here for a new guy.
