Proper way to check oil level?
I saw a post about this on a different site and it got me thinking. What is the correct way to check the engine oil level? If I check the level with my boat on the trailer it's at the full mark, but if I check in with the boat sitting in the water, it's about an inch over full. I'm assuming that after the boat planes off and is at speed, it levels out and brings the oil lever back to the proper height. How do you guys do it? Thanks

I also check in the water. The manual instructs that this is the proper way. Don't know the exact difference between sitting idle and on plane, but that's what the black book says!

I check mine with boat in water or on lift. Most dip sticks read the front portion of the oil pan. With the boat sitting in the water, most engines are angled slightly to the rear due to their weight. I fill my oil just a tad over full. I can verify this level by placing the boat on my lift and getting the engines level. It seems to work fine.
It would seem to me that attempting to check your oil level with the boat on plane would be extremely dangerous!!!!!!!
