Not nessessarily a reason to avoid, just be more cautious. New VC's and painting intake doesn't quite fall under tearing into a motor, just blinging it out.

It must be similiar to these Merc 575 hp efi's. The sticker on the manifold says so.

I agree, I think Mercruiser did try to spice up the look at one very short time, Somewhere around that time frame also, Because I am pretty sure I have seen that before myself.
