if you want it polished... sand it with up to about 800 or 1000 grit and then finish it off with heavy duty rubbing compound on a lambs wool pad. finally etch the shiny surface with por-15 metal prep and shoot it in glisten clear coat. it'll stay shiny and the paint will stick as well as any paint sticks to an outdrive. I've done mag wheels, my polished imco manifolds, and a lot of other things this way...
for rouging it up / performance wise, i understand that 400 grit is about the bvest range based on the typical speeds and surface characteristics of water... you want "turbulent flow" rather "than laminar flow"....

I just noticed this thread. Over the last few days I removed the paint from my bravo lower with a DA and rotory tool. Smoothed out all the imperfections, rounded off corners, then wet sanded with 600. I would have used 400 but I already had the 600. I like the look of the brushed alluminum vs painted. I am hoping to pick up a MPH or even a 1/2 MPH.

I use aluminum brightener (Nu-HUll boat cleaner)....i use it on the gel coat to take off scum lines and on lowers to shine them up. I wont hurt your boat, trailer, paint, or concrete. dont let it sit on hot surfaces of aluminum that are polished it'll turn in white and then you have polish again!!!!
