FWIW, I installed a aftermarket marine 496 rebuild kit in mine this spring. Nice kit and impeller. Impeller had same rubber consistency as a oem Merc going by feel. No problems after one season. Visibly more water out the tips vs 3yr old Merc impeller.

Did you have to machine the pump bracket? Or plug and play? Does it use a standard merc impeller?

I would not advise using a 3 year impeller for any boat app. Even with zero time on it. They form a set while sitting. The impeller for the AM kit is shaved down a bit. Apples to apples it produces a bit of less water volume flow than new merc impellers with a good condition housing.

Also the kit does not remy any side wear nor any side scaring in the impeller housing. It is not uncommon to have side wear and or side scoring in these brass impeller housings especially boats without sea strainers. Also improper winterizations with water that freezes in the impeller housing can check them up internally. You can volume test for water output right after the impeller to make sure its within OEM spec.

Bup, Any other known options? My housing has the scoring on both sides. Maybe i should just have the thing machined with brass...

Hardin Marine has a nice stainless gen 7 kit. From what I've heard it worth every penny.

I bought the Hardin stainless pump 4 years ago. It is a very high quality piece that can be completely rebuilt if needed.
