So we pulled the motor and found piston #6 broken and the rod bent pretty bad. Water enterd through the exhaust!!
this is what a local marine repair shop gave me as an estimate:
Remove engine and repower with a 8.1 Long Block
Remove existing engine and remove parts to be transfered to new long block
792.00
clean sealing surfaces of transferred parts and assemble on new long block(retail long block=8421.00)
1500 core charge-maybe refunded if core is ok
7200.00 long block
1584.00 labor
test run engine on the hard and ensure no leaks and proper operation
594.00
re-install engine in boat and lake test
990.00
total $13441.00
wtf are they thinking or am I just expecting too much of a better deal?

Don't forget the shop is charging a premium for some type of warranty coverage etc... on and on and on....
Yes, 13,441 is the "yupie" price. That means backing the boat in the yard and forgetting about it until they call you.
I'd buy one of those 2,800 to 3,500 deals and just check it out real, real good. There was a really good deal in the classifieds recrently for 496's..
There are a couple here in sd for less than 4k fully dressed and running.
