Default Check your valve covers for wear.

It sounds simple, but I once got real excited when I heard excessive valve train noise and it turned out to be my new roller rockers were tapping my valve covers in a few spots. It is always better to assume the worst, but be sure to double check the obvious. I hope that is all that is wrong with your motor. You will be good to go.

Was this the first oil change after the rebuild? You need to change oil quickly if assembly lube was used. It sometimes it will clog up the filter in just a few minutes of running.

F3LS Were new bigger Dia. valve springs installed along with larger O.D. spring retainers? Are you running Comp. Cams recommended spring pressures on this new cam? Too much spring pressure will collapse Hyd rollers or Hyd flat tappet lifters. Are you running roller rockers? Are the undersides of the rocker arms clearanced to allow use of new/larger springs/retainers? Need at least .030 clearance. Try passing the wire of an ordinary paperclip between rocker and edge of spring retainer through entire valve cycle. Do you have new correct length push rods with new cam? How much preload is being used on Hyd. roller lifters? My Comp. Cam spec. card calls for 1/2 turn on rocker stud nut. If you use much less, this can result in a rocker noise. I am running about 1/4 turn and it sounds like a tight lash solid lifter cam. If preload on Hyd lifters (roller or flat tappet type) is too little the push rod cup in

Oops sorry.......to continue: If preload on Hyd lifters (roller or flat tappet type) is too little the push rod cup in top of lifter will pound out the retaining clip holding the push rod cup in top of lifter. If larger springs are being used, put a straight edge across the rocker stud tops. Are you pulling a rocker stud? Alum or cast iron heads? What kind of push rods are you running? Are you collapsing a push rod end or did you bend a push rod? New Cam means the timing had to be reset. Have you checked timing? Are you into detonation? What kind of valves? Stainless valves are soft. When an engine is detonating and the valves are cherry red, its easy to tulip a valve. Are all valve tips the same height? Was synthetic oil used during initial start-up of engine. Most cam grinders do not recommend this as sometimes the rollers will slide on the cam lobes and gall. Was Moly lube used on new engine assembly? If so, oil filter should have been changed after about 20 minutes of engine running time as it can plug oil filters. Even if filter is or was plugged, the oil bypass should have maintained oil pressure. I personally would check a few of these things prior to further engine operation, to prevent possible engine damage.
