Default shift cable

I got lucky,,, all of a sudden forward got stiff in and out of gear,,, reverse is ok,,, I disconnected cable from shift bracket and it's still stiff, so at least its not in the drive. Should I replace the whole assy or can you just replace the cable ( I dont want future problems soon ) Where can I get a good deal on a shift cable? Do they come sized or do i cut it down to fit my application?
