Update On Oil Lubrication
I am back after a hiatus and though boatless getting back into the game soon.
Lots has changed in oil technology and most for the worst with newer oils having an SN rating. They took the ZDDP out of oils to protect catalytic converters. This oil is not for boats period. Boats need an SL rated oil...and not "SN" "SL"...and so on. Strictly "SL" So who are the survivors? Mercury Marine and Volvo oils to be sure. Mobil-1 10W-40 Motorcycle and 20W-50 V-Twin All Royal Purple oils in weights from 5W-20 to 20W-50...lighter oils are for cars and trucks and RP now is amazing stuff...it's one fo the few remaining GRP IV PAO's with lots of anti-wear ZDDP. Amsoil 15W-50 Dominator Racing OIl Amsoil Heavy Duty and Marine 15W-40 Redline 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil Oil Filters? Pure-1 (Amazon) K&N Amsoil EaO (M-1/Wix/Napa..have had some issues) Mercury Racing I don't use Frams...better choices My favorite is the K&N |
THANKS for the update,I will keep using the Mobil motorcycle oils as you have tested before.

Where does valvoline VR40 racing fall in to ?
I know a few people that use that. what about Pennzoil 25w50 GT racing ? |
Hydro-
What are your thoughts on Mystic JT-8 Semi Syn 15w50 ? (Citgo) It is targeted for diesels and I think it would be safe/Ok to run in a marine engine. |
I would compare the filter media of the K&N to the Amsoil EAO series. I did a lot of research when I bought my boat a couple of years ago. I looked at K&N, Mobil 1 Synthetic, WIX, Fram, Donaldson (Amsoil) etc. The filter media in the Donaldson filters is the best I could find. The fibers are very fine and uniform so you have more open area per square inch verses a cellulose fiber as in the K&N, WIX etc. The high uniformity also allows for better filtration of small particles. I personally use the EAO76 filter on my 522, almost 2qt capacity, no flow restriction whatsoever. Can't tell if the oil comes out cleaner then it went in.
