Bravo gearcase swapping
Can someone tell me some of the pitfalls of swapping different year lower gearcases with different year upper gearcases. One of the differances I found was a oil passage that ran adjacent to the main water channel. On My 1989 Bravo this oil passage isnt there. But on a 1994 Bravo there is. I want to use a 94 lower with a 89 upper case. I'm going to plug the oil passage in the lower case so oil wont leak into the water passage. Does this seem like a good idea?..........Gofast

GoFast, I just went through the same problem with putting a 98 lower case on my 89 upper. The newer lower has the oil passage hole. At this time I opted not to do the swap. But after checking it out in detail with a flashlight I would drill, tap and plug the oil hole then swap in all the internals from the old lower. I'm confident that this would work and not cause any oilling issues. As the oil from the upper would now pass between the two around the vertical shaft like it does on the 89 upper/lower. I am no expert, this is just my opinion. That's my disclaimer.

I had the same problem last year I bought a imco shorty that I was putting on a older upper. I called a bunch of outdrive builders out of the back of hot boat mag. They all told me to plug the oil passage. so I did and never had a problem yet. just one of the differences between new and old style drives.
