Gas questions

1. Why is ethanol bad for boats?
2. If a gas station has ethanol in their gas do they have to put a sticker on the pump saying "may contain upto 10% ethanol"
3. When someone says this motor needs premium will there be a difference between 91 and 93 becasue I have seen both as being labeled premium.

for one the alcohol will attract water..2, the marine hoses on older boats hoses,o'rings and what ever is rubber is not designed to handle the alcohol and will dry out the rubber and will eventually crack or rupture.

The booze will bump up the octane level, 91 would be base prem,, while 93 is 91 + 10% eth.
same goes with reg in my region. All comes in 87,, add 10% Eth you now have 89.

Ethanol is bad for boats for numerous reasons.
1. Ethanol can start separating from the gas after only 30days. It then sits at the bottom of the tank where the fuel pick up usually is located.
2. Ethanol will attract any moisture that may be in the fuel tank
3. When starting a boat after 30 days or so, you can get a straight shot of ethanol, therefore causing a lean condition and possible detonation to cylinders. Ethanol, obviously alcohol, can also strip the cylinder walls of any oil film, i.e. lean condition.

ahh I didnt know this. So what about the sinage at the pumps. Does it have to tell you if there is ethanol in the fuel?

here is a site with all kinds of ethanol facts, one to really take note on is if you get 87e10 and it sits and sepeartes your left with 85 octane: http://www.fuel-testers.com/gasoline...hanol_E10.html

This one will show state requirements for posting at pumps:
