Put-In-Bay info

We will be going to Put in Bay Memorial day weekend and would like all the info we can get. Two boats are going and we have never been before. We are staying on Middle Bass Island at St Hazards Condos(Any good??).

First question would be where is a good place to put in at and keep our truck and trailers the weekend? A safe, lighted place would be good!

Any things to look out for such as rocks in the water? Someone told me they were driving a pontoon boat and all of a sudden hit a big rock just under the water.

Any good maps to take with us? Anything we can print off line?

Any information would be great! Thanks.

I would pick up the charts, or go with someone who knows their way around. There are not many places to get you into trouble, but there are a few.

here is the NOAA chart...

http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/14844.shtml

There is a very very good chance we will be heading up there that weekend as well. We usually put in either at Catawba Island or Mazurik access. I have never had any trouble leaving the rig over the weekend at either. We sometimes put in in Sandusky, but the ride is a little longer over to the islands.

When day are you planning on going up? If we are going to be there at the same time I would be happy to show you around. Feel free to call me if you like, if nothing else give me a shout when you're at PIB and we can grab a cold one. We will be on B-Dock right downtown.

Give me a call Friday, depending on how work goes I should be at the ramp around 5. If the timing works out, you can follow us over to the islands if you want.

I agree to stay at PIB if you can. Don't drive back and forth from Middle Bass to South Bass, take the Sunny D ferry, then everyone can have fun!

Middle Bass has a new Marina, never stayed there with a boat but we stay at ST Hazards once a year. Do you have GPS? Everything is pretty well marked over there, just stay clear from the shoreline!

I hope you survive the Roundhouse, we'll see you up there!

My buddy has GPS in his boat. So we are good there.

Roundhouse? More info on that please.

St Hazards said your room came with a slip. i need to call them an ask them more about it. I guess it is the marina right next to the condos. How was your experience with St. hazards. There are mixed reviews on line. We plan on not being there that much. We will be on the boat the most of the time. Also What is the latest ferry from PIB to Middle bass island??

Thanks.

We stayed in the large place (pic on left hand side, yellow roof) You can see it facing PIB on the ride into the bay. We always had a great time there, these are the privately owned condos that people rent by the weekend/week.

http://www.sthazards.com/lake-erie-villa-rentals.php

Not sure there is a sifficient marina next to the condos. There's only one marine that can handle your boat, the state park. I've never docked there, I suppose it would be fine, not a complete facility though.

St Hazards is a good time when it's warm. Cool outside bar, pool. There's about 15 places to frequent at PIB, the Roundhouse is just a start, or a finish, depending on if you're a Marathon man or sprinter.

Jeff P31 05-04-2011 05:53 PM

State park has new docks but that is it nothing else there. The office was a trailer last summer when I was there.

Hit the boardwalk for the lobster bisque, catch a mad dog show, and finish it off with some pat dailey.

kjm5125 05-04-2011 08:52 PM

The Lobster Bisque is fantastic. :drink:

bigboat28 05-05-2011 09:01 AM

We are going too, it is the wifes b-day weekend, so I get to celebrate, LOL.
Lobster bisque for sure.

bigboat28 05-05-2011 09:02 AM

Kjm do you rack store at Skipper Buds in East Harbor?

big jing 2 05-05-2011 09:29 AM

New rest rooms are now open at statee park and m.b. yatcht club

RT930turbo 05-05-2011 10:47 AM

Sounds like there will be quite a few of us up there. Let's get a roll call thread going when we get closer. Where do the rest of you stay? We will be on B-Dock.

B-dock is where it's at, sleeping on the wreck (SeaRay).

pacalim1965@yaho 05-06-2011 12:01 PM

Don't forget to rent a golf cart and hit Lonz winery while on put in bay. Careful the wine goes down real faaassst and you could find yourself crawling back to your boat. I actually lost a day on the island, still don't know what happend. 24 hrs just vanished !!!!!

whoya 05-06-2011 12:16 PM

We might be up there (PNB) that weekend to.
As said before there are no docks at Hazards. Hazards is about a mile or so from the new state docks. The new docks are real nice. There is a shuttle that runs back and forth.

We usally lunch out of Muzuriks in Marblehead. Its a nice launch and lots of parking. If you go out of there its a straight shot north between Kelleys and PNB. Just go wide around the North East corner of PNB, follow the markers in(headed west) between Pnb and the little island to the north. Then to the right will be the entrance to Middle bass island state park docks.
Hope this kinda helps.

frickstyle 05-06-2011 03:55 PM

YES, follow.the.markers. Do not cut any "open" water that looks like it's "deep enough" around channel markers when getting near the islands. I'm sure many can attest to losing drives/grounding boats by doing that!

Fountain Family 05-11-2011 02:58 PM

Looks like we will be putting in at Catawba Island state park. It looks like its pretty close to Middle bass.

I just wanted to make sure there will be plenty of parking and that our rigs will be ok from Friday to Monday.

Anyone think i will have a problem with that ramp.

We should be there around 4 or 5pm on friday. Let me know if you will be there around that time and we will meet up.

Should have no problem leaving the rigs there. I'm going to do the same. It's an easy run up to MB. I may be up there about the same time, if I catch you we can run over in a group.

Did you get your slip situatuation taken care of?

Well kinda.... I felt the way the room was advertised it came with a slip. Well it doesnt. I called the marina and have a slip reserved so i am good now. I just think if someone advertises something online it should be very clear.

Its behind me now and i am ready to relax!

What is the water temp up there? I have never been before so i dont know what to expect.

pacalim1965@yaho 05-18-2011 07:41 PM

I grew up in that area, That is why i live in florida now. The water temp never seems to warm up much and then winter rolls in again. Summers in ohio are Way to short.

Ebay Ed 05-18-2011 09:41 PM

East Harbor state launch will cost you about $7.00 to launch but you will save that in gas over catawba by the time you idle for 20 miutes to get out of the harbor plus they have lighted parking and workers there during the day i might be around over at PIB and Kelly's if i get my boat back in time

Ebay Ed 05-18-2011 09:42 PM

oh and as pacalim said i wouldnt plan on getting in the water unless you are part fish this early or the little guy may retract up inside never to be seen again it hasnt been very warm up here to warm the water up

low_psi 05-18-2011 10:01 PM

This just in. Due to the sun not being visable for over 5 days and rain during most of this time, Put-In-Bay is now completly submerged. Now all that is visable is the Perrys Monument is now the only visable marker and it is currently just higher than a channel marker.

Last I checked the buoy in the center of Lake St.Clair was registering 40 degrees water temp.

Idle out of Catawba???? or east harbor?

Catawba is a strait shot, no idle whatsoever, and the shortest distance to PIB. Unless you're talking about the one on the harbor side...

We use the one next to the Catawba Island Club.

thirdchildhood 05-19-2011 06:57 AM

I go to PIB all the time from Lake St. Clair. I like to dock at the boardwalk since it is nicer, cheaper and that is where the gas dock is. It will probably be full on a week-end though. Get a paper chart. The waters are hazardous. Do NOT enter the harbor from the West (left) like I did here once. The rock line doesn't show up until you super zoom it in. It just looked like shallow water with sand and weeds. All of a sudden there was rock! I was only creeping along and had time to raise the drive but we grounded. We were able to get in the water and lift and push the boat off but the heat exchanger was plugged with crushed shells and the prop was slightly dinged. Had to get towed home. People were watching us and no one shouted a warning. Maybe they think it's funny watching people get in trouble there :(. The little loop at the bottom of my trail is where we gassed up and went out to see if everything was OK; It was not. That was the only time I've used my TowBoat U.S. coverage. Now I have a sea strainer too! PIB rocks. Have fun.
