Can anyone tell me the purpose of a reverse lockout valve? Just took a TRS and 454 out of a boat and repowered with a 260 alpha 1. I can't figure out to hook it back up. Does it need to be used? Can we bypass it anyway? Thanks for any help.

Boy that goes back. From what I remember it is so that you don't trim up when you are in reverse. I think the justification was that you don't want to raise / reverse your outdrive into an obstruction.

Locks the fluid flow in the trim system when in reverse so the drive doesn't lift up. Yes you need it. Also you shouldn't use the trim at all while in reverse beings the flow is locked. The valve is in the down (low preasure) line between the cylinders and the pump.

Think of a small outboard on a row boat. When you use reverse, the motor wants to "pull away" from the boat.

The lockout prevents the drive from pulling away from the transom.
