Default Scarab II speed issues

Time to get to the bottom of my engine issues. Rebuilt motors a few years ago and they have never pulled more than 4 grand or 45 mph. Timing is jumpy on both motors. twin 454 with 049 heads, very slight dome on pistons mild comp cam thunderbolt iv ignition stock q jet. 23p prop on standard trs drives. running r43ts spark plugs.

Are the plugs right?
The timing is a little high as I tried to set 32 at 3000. I thought this is where iv stopped advancing. This may be wrong. At idle it jumps around, like it misses.

Any thoughts?

I had the exact same boat.....stock 330hp motors will push her to the high 50's with 23 props. What kind of cam do you have in there? And did you inspect the distributor gears when installing them (assuming its the orriginal stuff)
Plugs should be fine...i would start by hooking up a vaccum gauge and looking at what the motors doing at idle....it should be steady needle. if not you may have a leak somewhere on the intake or a bad valve/spring...

Could be a bunch of things.

Since it sounds like both engines acting up, Im gonna guess something was done wrong. Whether its improperly adjusted valves, timing way off, cam timing off, etc.

What ign module are you using? We need to know that before any timing suggestions. 32* isnt enough total timing.

Your short about 15mph, maybe more. Like wally said, that boat should almost run 60mph with stock 330's.

You rebuilt the engines. how did you adjust the valves? Did you add roller rockers and make it a adjustable style valvetrain?
