Default Oil temp

I have a 468 N/A With crossover and hose running from crossover to tstat housing 160* tstat .have my oil Temp sender in the extra pipe threaded hole on remote oil filter. What temp should I be seeing? Just cruising around 3000 RPM I am seeing 225* new motor first time out yesterday. I have the cooler bypassed because with cooler hooked up running on water hose was only seeing 100* oil temp. Never ran it in the water with cooler hooked up so can't give you that temp.

I would at least give it a shot hooked up to the cooler actually in the water. Producing a load on the engine may make the oil temps rise above that 100 degree mark like when you were on the hose. Plus if you are like me, I only run idle/high idle on the hose. I can suck a garden hose flat if i rev it once. so i just dont. The lack of load on the engine and the low running on the hose could be why your temps never rise. I run a thermostatically controlled cooler. My oil temps hover around 190 and can touch the 200s. Perhaps you need a thermostat..

225 is not bad bad, but would seem to be getting close for some. 220 is where we try to keep it, don't let it get to cold, as it will foam up. So IMO and alot of others 220 is about the mark

260* = be careful and keep a close eye on it
280* = way too hot and the oil will start breaking down
The oil should get to at least 210* cruising in the 3000-4000 rpm range to burn off condensation.

The Mercury Racing 525 service manual says max oil temperature is 220*F. Hook up your cooler.........
