Default lead balls

I just pulled my motor out and decided to clean the engine bay. I started cleaning out all of the crap in the bilge and found hundreds of little BB sized lead balls. Anyone have any ideas of why they would be in there or what they are for?

Someone may have put in lead shot ballast up forward somewhere, and some may have gotten loose and run down the bilge.

You wouldn't believe the stuff we see in fishing and commercial vessels people put in for ballast. Most all of it makes for a huge corrosion mess that complicates repairs later.
