After wiping a lobe off of my camshaft I realized that a lot of material went through the motor is it good practice to block off the oil filter bypass or will I be asking for problems

Yes - good idea to block it off - I used a frost plug.

Don't forget to change the oil cooler also. I have seen metal everywhere. In the piston skirts, lifters, coolers, oil cooler hoses, valve guides, fuel pumps (MarkIV).
Sorry to hear about your problem, most of us have been there one time or another. |
unfortinatly, flat tappit cam cores are being imported from china, and are junk,i highly recommend going with a hyd roller if it is in the budget.im rebuilding a merc 370 hp rebuild for someone now and im worried about the new flat tappet cam, even with proper break in they still go flat.if you do use a flat tappet cam, make sure you use a good break in oil and add zddp to it.

I thought the cooler was after the filter if this is the case what is the possibility of debris getting in their?
At minimum put the filter after the cooler if it is not. |
