Dropping a small block chevy into a Jersey Speed Skiff, it needs to be power timed. Has anyone ever done this and if so what is the procedure. Also does anyone have a 12 degree carbuerator wedge for a Holley.

power timing is done with two people,,one driving the boat and the other turning the distributor,advance it until it pings then retard it until it stops..

me i would just use a timing light

It also helps to have a very accurate digital tach. My tach on my boat did not show the 50 r.p.m. gain made with slight adjustments.

cannot use a timing light, the engine goes in the boat backwards and the transmission is bolted on where the harmonic balancer would be.

If it were my boat, I'd find a way to mark TDC on something rotating like a flywheel. Timing by ear sounds like a good way to blow up a good engine.

Agreed, FWIW, about 20 yrs ago, I bought a brand new 280 Baja, with 330'S. The rear seat was so close to the motors that you could not see the balancers at all. In trying to get more speed out of it, the dealer "power timed" it.... Within a short period of time it was huffing out the breathers like a choo choo. It had detonated so bad it took out a couple pistons... Guess who paid... Me.

On the Grand Prix Hydros we timed them off of the flywheel .
Use a piston stop to determine TDC. make a pointer out of sheet metal or a piece of heavy wire.
If it has a 168 tooth flywheel each tooth is 2.14° 16 teeth = 34°
If it has a 153 tooth flywheel each tooth is 2.35° 15 teeth =35°

do all the adjustmenst on the ground first,,in other words run the engine with out the trans attached on the ground and make all the adjustments first.
